Thuja occidentalis is a coniferous shrub whose bark, leaves, and resin are used to make tinctures, poultices, and essential oil. Its main therapeutic uses are as a topical antiseptic and anti‑inflammatory for skin wounds, insect bites, and as a cough remedy when used externally; internal use is generally discouraged due to toxicity. Thuja contains thujone and other compounds that can be harmful if taken in large amounts, so it should not be ingested, used by pregnant or breastfeeding women, or applied patchy or long‑term without professional guidance.
