Scientific Summary

Viola tricolor, commonly called pansy, is a flowering herb whose leaves, stems, and flowers have been used traditionally. It is applied topically as a poultice or tincture to relieve minor skin irritations, or taken in small, mild teas to ease mild coughs and digestive discomfort. The plant is generally safe when used externally; however, ingestion in large amounts can cause mild gastrointestinal upset and some people may develop an allergic reaction, so use cautiously and avoid prolonged use during pregnancy.
