Comfrey (Symphytum caucasicum) is a herbaceous perennial with tuberous roots and hairy leaves that has been used for centuries to help wounds heal and to reduce joint pain. It is applied topically as a poultice or infused in alcohol or water to accelerate tissue regeneration and calm inflammation. Because the plant contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can damage the liver and may penetrate the skin, it should not be taken orally, should be used only for short periods or small surface areas, and is contraindicated for people with liver disease, and for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
